Cu Lord Ahriman despre Black Metalul actual, Metalhead Meeting si Dark Funeral - interviu

1. Hello to all of you! First time ever to play in Romania. How do you fell about it?

Lord Ahriman: It feels absolutely fantastic! It's always great when we receive an invitation, and get a chance to bring our supreme black arts to a new county and its Metal fans. And Romania, with all its history, is obviously a country I've wanted to visit, and play, for a long time. Finally, it is happening!!!

2. We are all looking forward to a new Dark Funeral album. Will we have one in the near future?

Lord Ahriman: We are currently showcasing our new line-up on festivals around Europe. And at the same time we're supporting our new single "Nail Them To The Cross", but a full-length album is in the work, but more than that I can't tell at this point of time. Once we have more concrete info, we'll surly let the whole universe know about it!

3. Everyone knows that you are an anti-christian or better say an anti-religious band, but is there anything that is related to the Christian dogma that you agree with?

Lord Ahriman: Not really! Since all religions are based on oppression, and to make people submit themselves to various fairytales, I can't really see any good coming out from there!

4. How was it back in the early '90 when everything started with Dark Funeral?

Lord Ahriman: When I originally started to audition musicians for the band in 1991, Death Metal was the big thing. To mention that you were forming a Black Metal band to people was just not too popular. And even if the extreme metal scene was quite united back then, coming from the north (Lulea) to a new town (Stockholm), where not many people know who you are, and at the same time going against the current trend and form a Black Metal band, was a bit controversial to say the least. However, I've always had a strong will and vision on what I want to do with my life and the music, so whatever people said or were thinking didn't really bother me at all. I had a mission that had to be done no matter what. And most people who knew me, knew this too. Anyway, once we had released our debut MCD in May 1994 we finally got the respect from the majority of the Death Metal legion and the scene in general. Although there were obviously people who started to hate us even more, especially cause of our instant success worldwide. Anyhow, 22 years later we're still around, we have over-lived all trends and most people and bands who started out at the same time as us. And we still at the top of the game, writing and releasing the most dark and extreme form of Black Metal known to mankind. So, whatever people thought back then, or whatever people may think today, it's quite irrelevant to say the least. We have proven ourselves enough I think. And we're both unbeatable and untouchable! We are DARK FUNERAL!

5. Dark Funeral is one of the bands that kept its raw Black Metal sound throughout the years. What's your opinion on nowadays Black Metal scene with all sorts of influences that somehow estrange Black Metal from its roots?

Lord Ahriman: It is obviously great that the scene is alive and kicking. And that new bands emerge and bring in something new to the table as well, but I'm not too fond of the direction many of this so called new Black Metal bands are heading. I guess it's a generation thing, but I miss that dark cold and eerie feeling bands of my generation have, as simple as that!

6. Who's responsible for writing music and composing lyrics for Dark Funeral?

Lord Ahriman: I'm main responsible for the music writings, but everyone in the band, especially Dominator & Chaq Mol, has some input along the way. On our new single, I co-operated with Dominator on the music, and with our new vocalist Heljarmadr on the lyrics. This was, more or less, the first time since our debut 1994 mini-CD I participated to this extent on the lyrical side of the songs, but I did actually enjoy it! Anyhow, the two of us wrote and arranged the lyrics together. Since it turned out so extremely good, I'm pretty sure we will continue to work like this also in the future.

7. Where do you get your inspiration from when it comes to lyrics?

Lord Ahriman: Sometimes when I write music, a lyrical theme pops up in my head that portray the feeling in the riff(s). Nowadays I write things down immediately so it can be used when it's time to write & arrange the lyrics. For many records I let Caligula focus on the lyrics all alone, even though I could give some input once in a while if something had popped up in my head while writing a song.

8. A lot of fans all over the world are listening to Dark Funeral, but what do you guys listen to? What bands have you recently discovered that are worth listening to?

Lord Ahriman: We all listen and dig different bands and music, and personally I haven't really listened to or been too impressed by any new Black Metal album to be honest. I've mainly been listening to bands and records I grow up with and feel still holds the Metal banner high lately, like Testament, Exodus, Judas Priest, Ozzy amongst others.

9. One final thought for your fans and our readers?

Lord Ahriman: Can't wait to play Metalhead Meeting! To finally be able to bring our supreme form of Black Metal to Romania will be a blast no doubt! And I'm sure our show will echo a long time after we have left the country too! See you on June 12!!!
