Kai Hansen a format Helloween in 1984. A plecat in 1989, formand Gamma Ray alaturi de vocalul Ralf Sheepers. Cei doi intentionau sa inregistreze un material, asa ca l-au recrutat pe basistul Uwe Wessel, tobarul Matthias Burchardt altaturi de cativa muziceni. Albumul Heading for Tomorrow a fost lansat in 1990 si s-a dovedit un hit atat pentru public cat si pentru critici. In 1991, Gamma Ray au scos un nou material intitulat Sigh No More. In 1993 Sheeperd a parasit formatia, formand Primal Fear. Hansen a fost ales pentru ocuparea pozitiei vacante. Au urmat alte lansari, precum Somewhere Out in Space, Valley of the Kings si Power Plant. Blast from the Past a fost lansat in 2000. Trupa s-a intors in 2001 cu No World Order, urmate de catre albumul live intitulat Skeleton in the Closed. In 2005 Gamma Ray au lansat Majestic, material care a beneficiat si de un turneu mondial.
