God Dethroned s-a nascut in 1990, atunci cand vocaul Henri Sattler impreuna cu cativa prieteni (M. Beukeveld, M. Arends si A. Dijkstra) au inregistrat un demo in 1992. A urmat un contract cu casa de discuri Shark. Primul album, The Christhunt nu a fost primit foarte bine. Dethroned au luat o pauza, Sattler formand un nou grup, Ministry of Terror.
In urma albului Fall of Life plus un turneu european, Sattler a decis sa reformeze God Dethroned alaturi de chitaristul Jens Vad Der Valk, bassistul Beef si tobarul Roel Sanders. Cu acest lineup trupa a semnat cu Metal Blade. A urmat albumul The Grand Grimoare in 1997. In 1998 materialul a fost lansat si in US. O data cu lansarea lui Into The Lungs of Hell, trupa si-a schimbat stilul, preluand elemente din melodic death metal.
Aceste influente se pot observa foarte clar pe ulitmul album intitulat The Toxic Touch, lansat in 2006.
