Goo Goo Dolls a luat nastere in New York in 1986. Membrii fondatori au fost John Rzeznik si Robby Takac. A urmat co-optarea lui George Tutuska. Numele a fost luat dintr-o revista. Primul album lansat a fost First Release, lansat sub egida Mercenary Records. Urmatorul album scos in 1987 s-a numit Goo Goo Dolls, fiind lansat de catre Metal Blade Records. In 1998 turpa a reziliat contractul cu Metal Blade, fiind preluati de catre Warner Bros. Primul material scos de catre noua casa de discuri a fost Dizzy Up the Girl.
