Topul The Songs of the Century a fost alcatuit de Recording Industry of America Association (RIAA), National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Scholastic Inc. si AOLSchool, pentru promovarea mostenirilor muzicale si culturale americane in scolile de pe teritoriul SUA.Cantecele au fost votate de oameni din industria muzicala, din media, profesori, demnitari si
studenti. Fiecare persoana care a votat a fost rugata sa ia in considerara importanta istorica a
melodiilor pe care le aleg. Lista finala cuprinde 365 de cantece din secolul 20.
