Interviu Metalhead Meeting 2016: XAON

XAON vor urca pe scena festivalului Metalhead Meeting sambata, 4 iunie.

Metalhead: What kind of energy you expect from the Romanian public?

As we’re some huge Romanian metal bands’ fans (incredible bands like: the thrasher maniacs from Tectonic, the gloomy Vokodlok, Dordeduh, Persekutor, Magica, Frozen Dusk, the melancholic and raw Ordinul Negru and the awesome early stuff from Negura Bunget), we can wait from the Romanian crowd a complete dedication to the groove and the metallic vibrations. About that, we already know that it will be not a huge and complex effort for the Romanian metalheads because when we listen the bands cited above, it’s clear that Romania is a country who possesses musicians and an audience that furiously loves to play and to listen Metal! Come as you are and have fun together!

Metalhead: How would you describe your sound to metalheads who never heard your band before?

Xaon’s music shines like a weird and spicy mix with a harsh melancholy, some low and tormented growls, some bunches of melody and some brutal drumming upon a clean and sorrowful lead vocal. Maybe a twisted cocktail with some pieces coming from bands like My Dying Bride, Primordial, Suffocation, At the Gates, Soilwork and of course, a lot of vodka!

Metalhead: What are you preparing for your show at Metalhead Meeting (new songs, anything special related to your performance)?

Usually, we work a lot with some video screenplay behind us, changing, moving conscientiously and methodically during our show. For this Metalhead Meeting, it will be a complete liberation because we will have no screen and moving images behind us. Only some cool backdrops and some rude lightshows. We will play as heavy and as loud as possible and to perform our song like a simple rock band, headbanging, sweating and chanting with you. We hope that you prepare some good booze for you for the show and make some warm-up with your neck muscles because we want to see you move as fast as the music play!

Metalhead: What are the main elements that inspire your music?

That’s really a difficult question. We never rationalize what we done in the Xaon’s seraglio in terms of the composition. We just open our hearts and write some lyrics and play hours and hours. Sometimes, screaming with rage because everything already bore the infamous seal of the “too-common” or the “too-vain” vibes and sometimes, breathing peacefully because we know that we touched at the heart of something cool, nice, groovy, brutal and just: well made. But if we have to think about images, smells, colours, fuel for imagination that we inspire a lot for the Xaon’s music and lyrics, I can evoke the beauty of the high mountains or a cold, cloudy, autumnal weather, the passing of time, the decay and the regeneration of Nature, meditations about suffering or about the loss of faith and death. Very common, isn’t it? But all of these things’ ringing truly in the depth of our hearts. There’s one more thing: The grandiloquence and the power of Art and Music.

For Xaon’s members, Music and metal music is like a vital maelstrom filled with its own energy, its own colours, its own smells and the voices of some living unknown persons or some-one who are dead for too long.. Music is like the Roman god: Janus. One head but two visages. Music, sometimes, is simply music and sometimes, it is just bigger. If you want to approach in order to plunge your hand and your forehead into this tumultuous and never-ending stream, you must to fight against yourself, against your desire of comfort, against your bad habit and your pernicious and false excuse. To listen, to understand and to play music or metal music is like a test and you should be able to overtake yourself in order to enjoy it in its fullness.

Metalhead: What do you think is your biggest achievement as a band?

For me, It’s very difficult to speak about the concept of achievement, because I continue to see Xaon as an entity in constant gestation. We’re some perpetual learners and we continue to dig into the cave of knowledges. Knowledges about ourselves and about Music. Why to wish one biggest achievement? Why can we wish a superb achievement for every day? Don’t contain, don’t hold yourself. Don’t be an unwell shiny star, be a majestic stellar burst, a cosmic explosion, a supernova that floodlights your depths for years after years.

But more pragmatically, I hope all the best for Xaon (the common wish of all band’s members). We wish to have the opportunity to be the overture for a legendary band, to play gigs in Iceland, Russia, Faroe Islands, on the African continent, Australia, Sweden, Finland, or some other exotic countries or in a little bar near of our home but filled with some dedicated metalheads that would begin to headbang as some maniacs at the beginning of our show.

Or simply to compose the most beautiful song that we are able or to write the most coherent album that we never made. Life is too weird, too vast and too rich to aim one single achievement. Even the biggest-one.

Metalhead: Can you name 5 awesome bands that Metalhead readers should know about?

Ah! A question about bands. I really like this kind of questions! Only five bands? Damn’.. It will be hard.. Okay! If you don’t know about these bands just take a look, you won’t be frustrated! PAYSAGE D’HIVER: a famous, swiss black metal band. Murky, ghastly and cold music. Perfect tunes to die frozen, the eyes bathed by the lofty, white and powerful mountains. CIRITH UNGOL: Heavy-doom horrific band with a mad and talented bassist and a devilish voice. The ol’ school band of my selection! Take a look (and let’s prefer the opus called: “King of the Dead” and “One Foot in Hell”)! DUX: The French band of this selection. The last opus: “Carnations” was a huge and massive blast for my ears. A power trio black metal band. A potent, melodic, tormented and wise music for the listeners that like the tasteful tunes. FUNERAL FOG: The Canadian-one! You won’t be submerged by disdain face to these tunes. You will float under what I will present as a profound devotion! THERGOTHON: maybe the Finnish pioneer for the funeral doom metal. Only one demo, one full-length: a complete fulfilment and a strangling voyage through Obscurity. Urkk! A good selection can’t be called as good as it wishes to be if there isn’t some bands like: PLAGA, SVARTIDAUOI, BEHERIT, DEATHSPELL OMEGA, WIEGEDOOD, etc..

Metalhead: Thank you for answering, any message you want to send to metal fans who will come to see you at MHM?
